10,5 million South Africans are behind on their accounts right now — more than one in three people with credit.
Falling behind is not a character flaw. Interest rates, retrenchments and rising food and fuel prices did this to households across the country. The people who get out are simply the ones who asked what their options were.

What changed for people who made the call
“I was answering calls in the bathroom at work so nobody would hear. Two months in, one payment leaves and my phone is quiet. I sleep again.”
“They showed me the fees on paper before I signed anything. That is the only reason I trusted them — I had already been burnt once.”
“The car and the house stayed. My instalment came down to something my salary can actually carry, and I know the date it ends.”
Three steps, and nothing is committed to until step three

Free assessment
A registered specialist phones you, usually within one working day, and goes through your income, instalments and arrears. A conversation, not an application — nothing reaches a creditor and nothing gets signed.

Written repayment plan
You receive a month-by-month breakdown: the fees, the amount reaching each account, and the timeline — before any signature, not after.

Protection activated
If it suits you, the application is filed, creditor contact routes through your specialist, and one instalment replaces the pile until your accounts are settled.

Every month you wait, this gets more expensive
- Interest and penalty fees keep pushing what you owe higher
- Creditors can hand your account over for legal action while you wait, which closes options
- Legal protection only starts the day your application is lodged — it cannot cover the past

Frequently asked questions
What is debt relief in South Africa?
Debt relief is a regulated process that helps people who cannot keep up with their monthly instalments. A registered debt counsellor works out what you can genuinely afford, then restructures your repayments into one affordable monthly amount.
How does the process actually help me?
Three ways: a detailed repayment plan built around your real income, legal protection so creditors deal with your counsellor instead of you, and one monthly payment distributed to your creditors by a registered payment distribution agency.
What are the steps, in order?
1) Free assessment of your income, instalments and arrears. 2) A written month-by-month repayment plan showing every fee. 3) Your application is lodged and creditors are formally notified. 4) One payment leaves monthly and is distributed. 5) Restructured accounts are settled and your clearance certificate is issued.
Can I keep my house and my car?
In most restructured plans secured assets are kept, with the instalment reworked to something your income can carry. Your counsellor confirms this against your actual credit agreements before you commit to anything.
I have already received a letter of demand or summons. Am I too late?
Not necessarily, but timing matters — once enforcement advances, some options close. Attend to legal letters immediately and have the document with you on your call so your counsellor can read it before advising you.
What does the assessment cost?
The assessment and the written breakdown cost nothing and carry no obligation. If you choose to proceed, the fees are the ones regulated for this process, and every rand of them appears on your breakdown before you sign.
